Did you know that the oldest continuously operating airfield in the United States is in College Park, MD? Did you know that the modern Thanksgiving turkey was developed in Beltsville, MD? Did you know that the first unmanned balloon launch in the US was in Bladensburg, MD? Did you know that the first field trials for the telegraph were conducted in and around Riverdale Park, MD?  With so many major moments in US  and Maryland History, Anacostia Trails Heritage Area Inc. has launched Maryland Milestones to celebrate the unique networks, the major moments, and amazing communities of the region.  The region will be home to YOUR milestones – from kayaking, to riding the trails, to experiencing history, to enjoying arts!

Located in northern Prince George’s County – bordered by Washington D.C., Howard County, Anne Arundel County, Montgomery County, and the Baltimore/Washington Parkway, the region encompasses approximately 84 square miles.  Come enjoy theaters, musicians, artist studios, and community based art.  Explore our abundant farmers markets and community festivals.  Take a ride in a canoe down the Anacostia and Patuxent Rivers; hike natural areas; bike the region’s trails; or just enjoy the outdoors.  Shop in our small communities and eat at our restaurants.  Anacostia Trails Heritage Area and Maryland Milestones will connect you with our history, culture, and nature.
